Deadwood, South Dakota
September 6, 2023 – Deadwood, South Dakota
Up early to another perfect morning – clear and cool. Down for the standard breakfast – scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns and juice. Again – OK but a distant second to a typical European hotel breakfast (eggs, cheeses, ham, salami, fruit, good coffee, etc. etc.)
Checked out and got on the road to Deadwood (sounds like a book title). The problem was that we were in a southern suburb of Denver and we needed to go north – at morning rush hour, no less. But Margaret got on to the computer to check the traffic maps and plotted a pretty painless route around the congestion. So off we went, northbound on I-25 toward Wyoming. Foothills of the Rockies on the left and a great, flat expanse in the right. The air here is pretty hazy – Robert thinks it is because of the higher humidity here, compared to the deserts of Arizona. No Tucson-blue skies here.
Things went well as we headed north on I-25 and then on US-85 until we reach the junction of US-85 and Colorado-585 where the road was blocked because of a motorcycle accident up ahead. We were advised to take 585 to pick up I-90 at Sundance, then I-90 to Deadwood. Being prudent people, that’s what we did and got to Deadwood at about 2:45.
We checked into the Doubletree that is part of the Cadillac Jack Casino, unloaded into our room (412) and relaxed for a bit. Then we set out to drive through historic Deadwood. The oldtown has many buildings dating to the late 1800’s – kind of reminiscent of Bisbee. Deadwood has some notoriety as being the place where Wild Bill Hickock was shot in the back while playing poker. He was holding two pair – aces and eights, now known as “The Deadman’s Hand”.
Back to Cadillac Jack’s and the restaurant Flyt, where steak is the specialty. We each had a lettuce wedge, with blue cheese and bacon, followed by bacon-wrapped filet (rare, of course), baked potato and sauteed mushrooms. Add a bottle of Justin Cabernet Sauvignon from Los Robles.
Done for the day (no gambling), so back to the room to relax and watch the U.S. Open. Tomorrow, a short jaunt to Sioux Falls.
